Thomas Taft Sr. Taft Family Offices President

Tom is a native of Greenville, North Carolina.  He is a graduate of Duke University, the University of North Carolina School of Law and he also attended The Hague Academy of International Law in the Netherlands. Tom previously served as legal counsel to Lieutenant Governor Jim Hunt and returned to his hometown to practice law with his father, building a practice which he has maintained for the past 45 years.  He currently serves as the President of Taft family Offices, developing all areas of our business while still finding time to devote to his legal practice and extensive community and public service.  For over 30 years, Tom has built upon his family’s history and experience as real estate developers constructing or acquiring real estate investments in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Virginia, and California.  He has developed and owns interests in more than 3,000 apartments, 200,000 square feet of medical office space, 150,000 square feet of commercial office space, 275,000 square feet of warehouse/flex space and holds additional ownership interests in office parks, retail spaces and mixed use developments, all of which total more than $650,000,000 in value.

Tom oversees the day-to-day operations of all departments of Taft Family Offices, individually reviewing all items which are critical to acquisitions, construction, and operations. Tom served three terms in the North Carolina State Senate, was a member of the UNC Board of Governors, the Southern Growth Policies Board, and the North Carolina Museum of Art Board of Trustees.  He served as President of the UNC Law School Alumni Association and was Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Golden L.E.A.F Foundation, and an active member of the Multi Family Executive Association, National Apartment Association, National Multi Housing Council, and the Urban Land Institute.  He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of the Southern Environmental Law Center. He has also established a distinguished Professorship in Science at East Carolina University to help recruit world class scholars to our area and also endowed a Distinguished Professorship at the UNC School of Law in environmental advocacy.
